Glasses for a Oblong Face Shape

A commonly used rule of thumb among opticians is to choose a frame shape that contrasts with your face shape rather than mirrors it — for example, adding angles where a face is soft and curves where a face is angular. Styling for an oblong face commonly aims to add visual width at the sides and minimize added height, similar in spirit to rectangle but often with an emphasis on softening rather than squaring off the jaw.

Frame shapes to look for

Do

  • Tall or oversized frames, or frames with detail along the top, can reduce the visual length of the face.
  • Rounder frames can soften the straighter sides without adding more length.

Avoid

  • Narrow, small frames leave a lot of bare face above and below, drawing attention to the length.
  • Tall, narrow rectangular frames can echo the face's own proportions rather than balance them.

A few more fitting tips

  • Frame width should generally line up with the widest part of your face, not extend noticeably beyond it.
  • Eyebrows are typically most visible just above or at the top of the frame, rather than hidden behind it.
  • Frame color and material (bold plastic vs. thin metal) can soften or sharpen a look independent of the frame’s outline shape.
